The first and most important thing to do is to secure your router

Today’s home can be filled with devices that connect to the internet. You can access the thermostat to change the temperature, view footage from security cameras, use voice commands to play movies or music, and much more through your Wi-Fi network.

This vast interconnectivity, referred to as the Internet of Things (IoT), can provide unprecedented convenience. Unfortunately, it also provides a vast number of home network access points that can be hacked. Taking a little time to think about your home network and how to secure it can go a long way in protecting yourself from potential hardships.

The first and most important thing to do is to secure your router. Secure your router by changing the default login details to something more secure than the default setting.

Also, you can change the name of your network from what is set by the manufacturer (just don’t use anything that can identify you as the owner of the network). Use a long, unique password or passphrase for your network, and keep it private.

Enable encryption (such as WPA2) in your wireless security settings and keep your router up to date with any security updates.

You can add further security by creating separate Wi-Fi networks to help isolate devices from your primary network, such as a Guest network.

There are also steps you can take to secure individual devices. First, identify all devices connected to your router. Disable or disconnect any devices that you do not use. Next, change the default password of the devices to something unique. Finally, check for software updates on your devices regularly.

Take some time to research the security features of devices that you are interested in prior to purchase so that you are comfortable with the connectivity of it. After all, does your toaster really need a Wi-Fi connection?

The Internet of Things continues to grow in scope and scale. Using these tips can help you continue to enjoy the convenience of these household devices securely.
