It’s that time of year when Hoosiers hit the road for fun and relaxation. Make sure your vacation remains enjoyable by following these tips for protecting your vehicle from theft during travel.

  • If leasing a car, don’t leave the documents or rental identification in the car. Don’t leave luggage on the back seat of your car.

  • If you are taking personal valuables with you, contact your insurance agent about additional coverage before you leave. Likewise, bicycles, motorcycles and boats may need additional coverage during travel. Check with your agent ten day before departure.

  • Select parking lots with an attendant. Don’t leave your parking ticket in the car.

  • Magnetic boxes to hold an extra set of keys are popular. Don’t use them! Thieves know about them just like you do!

  • When parallel parking, turn the wheels sharply to one side. In vertical spaces, front-wheel-drive vehicles should park nose first, and for rear-wheel-drive vehicles, park trunk first. This deters towing thefts.

  • Don’t leave an ID tag on your key ring, and don’t leave your key ring in your car.

  • Carry your roadside assistance card and number with you in case you need help during travel. Carry a cell phone with you so you can call for help immediately.

Finally, don’t forget to do an auto maintenance check before you go.
